Things You Need to Know
- "Polygon" is just a term for a closed two dimensional shape.
- A quadrilateral is a 4 sided polygon.
- An isosceles triangle has two sides with the same length.
- An isosceles trapezoid has its non-parallel sides having the same length.
- A regular polygon is a polygon with sides that are all the same length and angles that are all the same measure.
- To find the sum of all the angles in a polygon:
- Sum = 180 x (n - 2)
- n represents the number of sides on the polygon
- Make sure you do the "n - 2" part first.
- Sum = 180 x (n - 2)
- To find the measure of each angle in a regular polygon
- Find the sum (see last step).
- Divide by the number of sides.
- Shapes "tessellate" if they form a repeating pattern when stuck together without any gaps or overlaps.
- Tessellation is very important for tiling, landscaping, and architecture.
- To determine if a shape tessellates, find the measure of each angle inside the shape, and then see if you can add them together to make 360 degrees.
